Common Signs of Gum Disease

Gum disease is also known as periodontal disease, a condition that causes inflammation of the tissue around the patient's teeth caused by bacteria building up in the area. Common signs of gum disease include red, swollen, or tender gums, bleeding gums when brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath, gums that have pulled away from the teeth, loose or shifting teeth, changes in bite, and pus between teeth and gums. Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) is reversible with professional cleaning and improved oral hygiene. Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) requires more intensive treatment such as scaling and root planing, medications, or surgery.
