When Are Dental Sealants Recommended by a General Dentist?

A general dentist can practice preventive dentistry on their patients. Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to prevent tooth decay. They are most commonly recommended for children and teenagers when their permanent molars come in, but adults can benefit from them too. The sealant bonds into the depressions and grooves of the teeth, forming a protective shield over the enamel. Sealants can protect teeth for up to 10 years with proper care. They are especially helpful for patients who are prone to cavities or have deep pits and fissures in their molars.
